A stolen box truck led the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) on a chase through Bonney Lake on Sunday, resulting in a crash where the suspects needed to be saved by deputies.
At approximately 12:45 a.m., PCSO deputies located the stolen box truck traveling eastbound on 120th Street E. from 198th Ave. E. in Bonney Lake, PCSO announced.
Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the suspects sped off and led deputies on a pursuit of the stolen truck.
PIT maneuvers deployed on stolen box truck in Bonney Lake
The stolen truck was driving recklessly as it eluded law enforcement, oftentimes swerving into oncoming traffic lanes.
PCSO attempted two precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuvers, causing the truck to sway from side to side and nearly tip over onto its side in the middle of the road. A PIT maneuver is a tactic in which a pursuing vehicle forces a fleeing vehicle to turn sideways abruptly, causing the driver to lose control and stop.
A third PIT maneuver was successful, as the suspects lost control of the truck and drove off the road into a section of trees. PCSO deputies approached the cab of the truck and noticed the two suspects were trapped inside.
The fire department was called to assist with rescuing the suspects; however, deputies noticed smoke coming from the truck and had to act quickly to save the suspects.
Deputies began using a flashlight to break open the front windshield and create a hole for the suspects to crawl out of.

The suspects successfully escaped the smoking truck through a small hole created by PCSO deputies.
The two male suspects were removed and taken into custody. PCSO took them to a safe distance away from the smoking truck, where the fire department administered medical care. Both suspects were later transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver, a 42-year-old, was cleared by the hospital and booked into the Pierce County Jail for possession of stolen property, eluding, and assault on police officers. The 38-year-old male passenger was taken to the hospital and released to receive care for his sustained injuries.
PCSO will forward a report of his current warrants, and the box truck was removed from the scene.
