A 54-year-old Yakima man was arrested Wednesday night after crossing the center line and crashing into a vehicle carrying a family of four, injuring a 10-year-old child, said the Yakima Police Department (YPD).
YPD said the driver was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence and vehicular assault after investigators determined he was impaired.
Emergency responders arrived on E Yakima Avenue around 9 p.m. Wednesday to find two heavily damaged vehicles. One vehicle had rolled onto its side, trapping four occupants inside, including two children.
All four family members were transported to MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital for treatment following the crash. The 10-year-old child was airlifted to Seattle Children’s Hospital. The child’s mother was treated and released.
Investigators said that the 54-year-old driver was under the influence of multiple narcotics when his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic. Officers arrested the Yakima man at the scene on charges of DUI and vehicular assault.
The YPD is continuing to investigate the crash.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Officer Adam Schilperoort at (509) 424-1643.
