They say they're willing to take on any challenge - even a hard drive buried in 40 feet of mud. "You want to be careful about getting things off because you don't want to scratch or break the surface when you're doing that."

Richard Leickly, also an Edmonds Communtiy College instructor, explained that they have to work in a clean environment - even a spec of dust on a hard drive platter, the part that holds the data, can ruin the recovery process.

"We have these great minds here. Can we do the data recovery efforts of their hard drives, cameras and USB thumb drives, stuff like that, that may have pictures that they've lost, documents, tax records, their business records and so on," said Rob Matthews, a student at Edmonds Community College.

For most of us, when we lose a loved one we have memories, mementos and pictures, to remember them. Many of those photos were kept on computers lost in the slide, until students at Edmonds Community College get their hands on the hard drives. Like surgeons, the students of Digital Forensics and Information Security are given a case. They study it. Give a prognosis. And then, with delicate hands, go in and fix the problem.
