Rantz: Democrat state senator breaks COVID mask mandate he forces on us

Democrat State Senator Marko Liias says a COVID mask and vaccination are “reasonable requirements” to put on the population. Yet, it’s not a reasonable enough requirement for him to follow the mandates.

Liias ditched his mask Saturday night at the University of Washington football game at Husky Stadium. This is against both the state and King County mandates — both of which Liias supports. He’s implied the unvaccinated, maskless populace are villains. So what is he?

The state senator is the latest local Democrat lawmaker caught breaking the COVID mask mandate they impose on you. Consider this a lawmaker’s privilege in Washington state.

When it comes to COVID, Liias appears to view masking and vaccinations as moral imperatives. He even deflects criticisms of tyranny from Americans concerned with government overreach on COVID policies.

“Tyranny would be a government that let its people die from a preventable illness — not one that is doing everything it can to save lives and stop a deadly disease,” Liias tweeted.

As a representative of the government, Liias isn’t doing everything he can to stop the spread of COVID.

Liias took time from the Huskies game for a maskless photo, which is not permitted under Governor Jay Inslee’s mask mandate. It’s also not permissible under the King County guidance. He posted the selfie to his Facebook page.

Democrats deemed the pandemic so severe that you may only remove your mask in an outdoor venue with over 500 people present to eat or drink actively. Maskless selfies aren’t permitted. One would think Liias would not risk spreading or catching COVID for a vacuous selfie.

Do as I say, not as I do

This wouldn’t be an issue worth mentioning if Liias weren’t one of the insufferable voices presenting himself as a hero for wearing a mask.

“I’m gonna keep wearing them over my beard in this hot summer weather because I love my family, friends and neighbors that much,” Liias tweeted over the summer.

You see, if you don’t wear a mask, you don’t love your family. It doesn’t matter if you and your friends already recovered from COVID, nor does it matter if you’re vaccinated. You’re a terrible person when you don’t follow the rules that Liias pushes. Be more like Liias! He’s a hero — just ask him.

“When the history of our time is written, those that took decisive action to save lives and reduce suffering will be the heroes,” Liias declared. “Wearing a mask and getting vaccinated are reasonable requirements in the face of a preventable and dreadful disease.”

Unwilling to wear a mask and be vaccinated? You’re a villain, he implies. In this case, however, Liias is the villain.

Liias has an excuse: He felt like taking a selfie

Liias’ office did not respond to a request for comment. On Facebook, however, Liias offered an excuse: He mostly just felt like taking a selfie.

He said he removed the mask “for a few seconds” for the selfie, so naturally, we should give it a pass. After all, selfies are necessary during a pandemic. When the history of our time is written, we do need some clear, mask-free photos from the leaders who got us through it.

Liias isn’t the only Democrat to lose the mask against mandates or guidance.

King County Executive Dow Constantine posted a photo in a crowded, small room for a re-election campaign event. Everyone in the room was without a mask. He has lectured us for months about the importance of wearing masks. Our lives depend on it. He deleted the photo after I published a story about his behavior, but did not explain why.

Here’s why this matters

I point out the Liias behavior not because I want him in a mask while he takes photos. I’ve taken photos with fans while unmasked. It’s a story because Liias is one of the leaders forcing masks on us.

There’s no reason to wear a mask outdoors while fully vaccinated. In fact, what’s the point of wearing a mask if vaccinated at all? Doesn’t the vaccine work? We will all eventually get COVID. It will likely be no different than dealing with the flu every season. I don’t plan on wearing a mask forever. I’m vaccinated, and that should be enough.

Liias could demand more reasonable COVID rules or pressure Inslee for a special legislative session so that Washingtonians have representation in Olympia. He’s not doing either because he’s too busy playing hero.

If Liias doesn’t want any changes to the COVID mandates, so be it. But he should be called out every time he breaks his own rules.
