Rantz: Liberal activists livid when SDOT acknowledges cars exist

Who knew an innocent, safe-driving event would trigger the ire of Seattle’s extremist urbanist class? Well, the Seattle Department of Transportation just found out.
Last week, SDOT partnered with Lyft to promote safe driving on 4/20, a “holiday” celebrated by pot enthusiasts. Sometimes, people drive high. That’s dangerous.
SDOT, in their event, implored drivers to ditch driving, instead taking the bus, light rail, or a ride-share service. The event featured speakers from SDOT, the Seattle Police Department, and Lyft, and featured media members (including myself) in a Chopped-like competition to make the perfect munchie.

It was fun and harmless. Unless you’re a crazed urbanist.
Activist Seattle Twitter, primarily but not exclusively Socialists, exploded with angry extremists, mad that SDOT partnered with Lyft, and acknowledged that cars exist.
Or how about promoting public transit?? Not like Seattle doesn't already have busses and light rail services.

Damn crazy thought but what if you partnered with king county metro and really just made public transit easiest and more convenient. Whatever deal Durkan signed I’m sick of the city promoting lyft and Uber while also the city prevented Uber/lyft drivers from unionizing

This is absurd. Private ride share companies undermine public transit and weed, while perfectly cool, is an intoxicant! Would you partner with Budweiser? And to include the #Visionzero branding? Tasteless. This is a blunder.

In their world, SDOT should never, ever accommodate drivers, nor should they promote cars. It’s a warped and naive view for any transportation department, but when you’re an entitled activist, enabled by a council that gives you more power than you deserve, you’re easily triggered when you don’t get your extremist way.
