He didn’t have to do it, but Mckinley Zoellner felt the need to protect a Texas deputy as she pumped gas.

After the fatal shooting of Deputy Darren Goforth on Aug. 28, Mckinley decided it was his duty to protect the deputy in Harris County.

“My first intention was just to do something nice for someone and it turned out to be national news,” Zoellner told KIRO Radio’s Jason Rantz.

Deputy Tommi Jones Kelley posted a photo of Mckinley and herself following the kind gesture.

“Yes, I’m the one with the gun on my hip while he stood there empty handed,” Deputy Kelley wrote on Facebook. “But he for sure had my ‘6’ while my back was turned.”

The photo has gone viral.

“He stepped up and did something considerate and brave during a time of high anti-cop angst in a community still dealing with the murder of a cop,” Rantz said. “You don’t see kids stepping up like that.”

Like Rantz, Mckinley is a huge fan of soccer. He hasn’t been able afford to go to a game in person. However, the Seattle Sounders travel to play the Houston Dynamos on Oct. 18, and thanks to Rantz and the soccer clubs, it will be a game Mckinley can attend. Rantz informed Mckinley he will have a pair of tickets to the game during his show Wednesday evening.

“That’s awesome, thank you so much,” an emotional Mckinley told Rantz.

For an act as courageous as Mckinley’s, Rantz said he deserves to see his first Dynamos game for free.

Ok, so EARLY this morning I was pumping gas in my patrol car (reason I look like a Hot Mess!)…& add it was pouring…
