Being a courteous neighbor might mean running outside in your pajamas

John Curley rushes out to his chicken coop every morning at 4:35 a.m. to make sure one of his feathered animals doesn’t wake the neighbor.

The KIRO Radio Show host told Tom Tangney that he makes sure his beloved chicken-turned-rooster keeps quiet.

“I rush about 100 yards out to the chicken coop … OK, maybe 50 yards,” Curley said. Even 50 yards is a long way to run in the morning in your pajamas.

The morning rush to stifle the early wake-up call is one way Curley and his family tries to keep good relations with the neighbor.

Being a courteous neighbor is a topic being debated in Seattle’s Portage Bay neighborhood. A two-year battle has ensued between one family and surrounding residents in the 1000 block of East Shelby Street. The Seattle Times reports that a girl that has been feeding crows has caused murders of the birds to flock to the area.

Neighbors say there are 30 to 100 crows in the area during the feedings, the Times reports. There have been reports of trash being scattered in the area and heavy bird feces.

Though a single chicken couldn’t cause the same kind of havoc, Curley doesn’t want tension like that in the Portage Bay neighborhood.

However, things could change.

Curley’s neighbor is planning to get some animals of his own, including chickens and goats. If they get a rooster and allow it to crow, his morning sprints are over.

“If [the neighbor] has [a rooster], then all bets are off,” Curley said.
