As the community reels from the tragic crane accident on Saturday, it puts into focus the delicate nature of life. Three men and one woman were killed when a crane collapsed at the intersection of Mercer Street and Fairview Avenue North in Seattle.

Others barely escaped with their lives, including a friend sitting next to Seattle Pacific University student, Sarah Wong, who passed away at the scene. KIRO Radio’s John Curley and Tom Tangney discussed the sequence of events and the frightening nature of random tragedies such as these. There were approximately 220 fatal injuries involving cranes between 2011 and 2015, with an average of 44 per year, according to the Department of Labor’s Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries.

Investigators are currently looking into loosened bolts and weather as playing a part, and are examining if there were any safety violations among the contractors involved.
