Curley: Terrorists don’t give you a heads up

If someone really wanted to blow up a school, KIRO Radio’s John Curley believes they most certainly would not warn the school ahead of time.

Curley and Tom Tangney discussed the Los Angeles Unified School District’s decision to shut down all of its schools because of an emailed threat it received Tuesday morning that appeared to come from overseas. Officials said the San Bernardino shooting influenced the decision to close all schools. New York City officials said they received the same threat but quickly determined it to be a hoax.

Curley said that if he ran a school district and received a threat like that, he would keep the schools open.

“The deal is, with a bomb, you want to kill as many people as possible,” he said. “So you don’t call ahead so they run out. You want to blow the place up, you want to blow up and kill people. That’s what they do.”

Curley mentioned the Boston Marathon bombing as an example of an attack being done quiet ahead of time on purpose.

“Bomb threats are just to cause disruption,” he said. “They’re not there to cause mayhem and carnage.”

When posed with the question of whether he would close schools, Tom wanted to know more specifics (how specific were the threats? who are they targeting?) but generally went in the opposite direction.

“Well, if you want to keep em open, I better close mine down,” Tom said. “The idea is, because New York has come out and said we received the same threat, it makes LA look like maybe overreacted. However, what LA first said, and this is why I can’t judge, they said we get threats all the time, that’s no big deal. This, however was a rare threat. I don’t know what they mean by rare.”

To which Curley responded, “Just goes to show, my kids in my school district are being educated. Yours, one more day of ignorance.”
