Medved: No honest Republican thinks Obamacare can be stopped

The countdown is on. The Affordable Health Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, kicks in on Oct. 1.

Michael Medved told KIRO Radio’s Tom and Curley on Monday that Sen. Rand Paul and Sen. Ted Cruz, staunch critics of President Obama’s health care plan, have come on his show and told him there’s no way to defund Obamacare.

So what are they doing, they’re advancing their own careers, they’re advancing their own presidential campaigns and meanwhile, destroying the party that I care about. Destroying any chance at all for Republicans to either win the Senate or to, increasingly, hold the House. I think we could lose the House over this.

On Friday, the House approved a plan to continue to fund federal agencies past Sept. 30, but strip funding to Obamacare.

The bill now goes to the Senate.

What bothers me about it most and what I find most unforgivable is people like Ted Cruz and Sarah Palin are lying to the base. They are getting people’s hopes up, saying this is going to be a big fight. There is no possible way. You can game this out all you want. President Obama was very clear about this. He will veto any attempt to remove Obamacare from the books. It passed four years ago without a single Republican vote. I wish it hadn’t passed. I don’t like it, but for God’s sake, it borders on immoral, at this point, to lead people to believe that this isn’t the law of the land and they don’t have to adjust their lives to deal with it.

Medved said he believes there’s an 80 percent chance the government will shut down.

I think it’s going to happen. President Obama will gain from it big time. Ted Cruz will personally gain from it. The only loser is the Republican party national.

There is no sane, mainstream, honest Republican or conservative who thinks this is a good idea.

Let’s say, through some miracle, you get six Democratic senators to vote with you, Obamacare is defunded, the Senate passed it, the House passed it, it’s on the president’s desk, he takes his veto pen and writes VETO, big letters, signs it, and boom, it’s vetoed.

Do you think there’s any chance, Senator Cruz, to get 22 Democratic votes to override their president’s veto and agree to repealing his signature achievement: Obamacare? Everyone says no.

So what’s the point?

The only choice Republicans face at the moment, now that we’ve sort of boxed ourselves in, is are we going to surrender to Obama before or after a wildly unpopular government shutdown?
