What is an appropriate response to being pulled out of a ditch?

John Curley ran into a tough spot the other day.

The KIRO Radio host drove his truck into a ditch. Luckily, a tow truck was passing by as it happened.

Instead of continuing on, the driver of the tow truck backed up and pulled Curley’s vehicle out of the ditch. The vehicle was undamaged.

To show his appreciation, Curley handed the driver a check. Initially the driver refused, but accepted after Curley insisted.

“I said, ‘No, you should be paid,'” Curley reminisced.

But is paying someone who helped him out, out of the kindness of their heart, the right move? Should it have been a monetary exchange?

The problem is Curley didn’t know of a better way to thank them. He wrote a $200 check to show how happy he was the driver went above and beyond just normal service.

It’s an illustration of the greatness of humanity that Curley is always doubting, his co-host, Tom Tangney, pointed out.
