Washington health officials are urging eligible residents to donate blood as hospitals across the region contend with a critically low blood supply.According to the Washington State Department of Health and Bloodworks Northwest, fewer than one to two days’ worth of blood is available, raising concerns for patients in need of lifesaving transfusions. The shortage comes during the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, often referred to as the “100 Deadliest Days,” when serious traffic accidents and traumatic injuries typically rise while blood donations decline. Bloodworks Northwest recently issued a Code Red Alert, joining a nationwide appeal by blood-collection organizations for more donors to help replenish supplies.Officials are emphasizing the urgent need for donors of all blood types, particularly Type O, and for platelet donors. Blood donations are used daily to support emergency trauma care, cancer treatments, surgeries, organ transplants, premature infants, and patients experiencing complications during childbirth.Same-day appointments can be scheduled through Bloodworks Northwest’s website or over the phone by calling (800) 398-7888. Those interested also can text BWAPP to 999-777 to download and book an appointment on the Bloodworks App.Appointments can also be scheduled by visiting these Northwest Blood Coalition members’ websites:American Red CrossVitalant
