The National Weather Service has issued an air quality alert for Western Washington as wildfire smoke is expected to move into the region, starting today. Air quality is predicted to worsen through Tuesday and Wednesday before improving later in the week.

Until then, here are a few health precautions to keep in mind during the smoky period.

The American Lung Association recommends staying indoors as much as possible, keeping windows and doors closed, and using air conditioning to recirculate air. A portable air purifier is another good option for improving indoor air quality. If you need to spend extended time outdoors, consider wearing an N95 respirator and avoid strenuous activities.

For four-legged friends, the American Veterinary Medical Association recommends limiting dogs’ time outdoors to short bathroom breaks and keeping cats indoors. Make sure pets have consistent access to fresh water, and watch for signs of smoke exposure such as coughing, difficulty breathing, watery eyes, or decreased appetite. Puppies, kittens, senior pets, and animals with preexisting heart or lung conditions are especially vulnerable.

Before spending time outside, check the Air Quality Index and, if possible, reschedule outdoor activities for times when air quality has improved.
