WinCo Foods is coming to The Landing in Renton, taking up the space that once hosted Fry Electronics.

To celebrate the Aug. 3 opening, WinCo social-media representatives will, starting at 9 a.m., be at the Renton store handing out branded items while supplies last.

WinCo is unique among grocery chains in that it offers lower-cost groceries and is employee-owned. To keep costs low, the chain doesn’t accept credit cards, and customers bag their own groceries. WinCo does, however, accept debit cards, checks, and EBT as payment.

Anticipation for the Renton store has been building since 2024, when WinCo purchased the space — especially since, previously, the closest WinCos were in Kent, Federal Way, and Edmonds.

Despite community enthusiasm, the road to opening has not been smooth. In 2025, the Lake Washington Working Families coalition attempted to block development plans, citing concerns about traffic and environmental impacts, though it was ultimately found not to have standing, the Seattle Times recently reported. The same coalition has also recently delayed plans for the first WinCo in Seattle, which would take over a former Sam’s Club location on Aurora Avenue.
