Fan of the week: Dad chooses playground time with son over game highlights at T-Mobile Park
Apr 21, 2026, 5:00 PM
On a warm, sun-soaked afternoon at T-Mobile Park, where the crack of the bat mixes with waterfront views, and families fill the concourse, one Seattle Mariners fan is redefining what it means to enjoy a day at the ballpark.
For Daniel and his young son, Julio (yes, he shares the same name as Mariners star Julio Rodríguez), the highlight of game day isn’t always what happens on the field.
Instead, it’s what happens just beyond it. Along the first-base side, past the iconic ballpark food and bustling crowd, the Mariners’ playground has become their go-to spot. While innings tick by and home runs echo through the stadium, Julio climbs, runs, and plays, while Daniel watches nearby, often missing the biggest moments of the game.
On this particular day, that included a booming home run from Randy Arozarena — a highlight many fans would consider can’t-miss. But for Daniel, it’s a trade-off he gladly makes. Between checking in on the score and keeping an eye on his son’s next adventure, the game becomes background to something more meaningful: uninterrupted time together.
In a ballpark built for big moments, it’s a quieter one that stands out. Daniel knows he can always catch the highlights later. What he won’t get back are afternoons like this, where being a Mariners fan means sharing the experience, even if it happens a few steps away from the field.
Speed round questions:
What is your favorite Mariner moment?
Daniel: “Of all time…?”
Luke: “Yes…”
Daniel: “Well, it’s recent … last year I was at the grand slam game in the playoffs and the walk off.”
He was referring to Jorge Polanco’s Game 5, 15th-inning walk-off single to clinch the American League Divisional Series against the Detroit Tigers and Geno Suarez’s Game 5, 8th-inning grand slam home run during the American League Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Who is your favorite Mariner of all time?
Daniel: “Ichiro! He just had swag. He was fast. I’ve never seen someone swing and run at the same time.”
What’s your go-to food at the ballpark?
Daniel: “I usually like sushi over by home plate.”
Luke: “Yeah, you’re going to get ripped for that. Some people would say a hot dog.”
Daniel: “Glizzies are overrated.”
What’s your favorite team to hate?
Daniel: “The Houston Astros.”
Luke: “Yeah, everyone says the Astros.”
Daniel: “They just used to beat us up so badly, you know, like a little bully, and now we’re the bullies.”
What is your favorite Mariner uniform?
Daniel: “Teal, for sure … teal.”
