Seattle quintet Smokey Brights have, without a doubt, kept me interested and engaged since their inception several years ago. I’ve also been fortunate to have had several delightful chats with various members of the band over the years. However, just when I think I’m getting to know the group and their musical style, these five marvelously gifted people go ahead and create a record like Hot Candy. This album is off the charts something else. It’s jagged, upbeat rock and sexy, sad seventies that will turn, without warning, into a skittering, psychedelic, crushing crescendo climax. And that’s just scraping the surface. There are so many disparate levels of awesome happening within this album that if you listen, and then listen again, you just might begin to understand exactly what Smokey Brights are telling you.

Make sure to see Smokey Brights at Neumos this Friday for their Hot Candy album release show along with Radiation City and Sloucher.

5 ideas for avoiding an overemphasis on short-term results.

Recency bias is the tendency to place too much weight on the latest performance trends while giving short shrift to other factors, such as fundamentals, valuation, or long-term market averages. Market news, by definition, focuses on recent events rather than long-term trends. As a result, recent events are top of mind, easier to remember, and […]

Trump invoked all corners of American history. How might he use them to build his new ‘Golden Age’?

NEW YORK (AP) — He talked of a new Manifest Destiny and a “Golden Age.” He invoked the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. An honor guard appeared with tricorn hats, fifes and drums — all traditional Revolutionary War iconography. Those in attendance heard tunes deployed from the classic American songbook […]

Grins and frowns, seriousness and levity: The faces of the 2025 inauguration

A pastor, his eyes closed, preaches his heart out for history. A former president spots an acquaintance, then grins and winks. Tech billionaires, all in a row, look on with intent expressions. Supreme Court justices scan the room. Any crowd is, by definition, a collection of faces. But in those moments when history pivots, the […]

What Melania Trump wore to the inauguration — including the hat

While red baseball caps have become synonymous with President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump made her own millinery-related fashion statement, sporting a navy wide-brimmed hat by an American designer on Inauguration Day. The hat designed by Eric Javits shielded the first lady’s eyes as her husband was sworn in Monday for the second time. […]

A key to protecting apples from climate change might be hiding in Michigan’s forests

In the quest to make apple trees more resilient in a warming climate, some Michigan researchers are looking for a late bloomer. A native Michigan apple tree, the Malus coronaria, learned to fight frost by blooming two or three weeks later than the trees that produce cultivated varieties of apples like Honeycrisp or Red Delicious.
