Art in the Pearl: Portland’s Labor Day Tradition Turning 30 This Year

Every Labor Day Weekend, Portland likes to celebrate with art. It comes with 140 artists, tree-lined park blocks and a very good excuse to bring home something you probably did not plan on buying.
Art in the Pearl takes place in perhaps the most fitting spot Portland could offer an art festival: the North Park Blocks. This historic, leafy green urban retreat in the heart of the Pearl District pairs towering trees and open park space with the buzz of downtown. Add artists and local food vendors to the mix, and for Labor Day weekend, the park becomes one seriously good-looking outdoor gallery.
Jury-selected artists from across the United States and Canada showcase original works ranging from paintings and photography to ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, fiber art and woodworking. Unlike a traditional gallery visit this festival is made by the community and artists themselves, and that means you’ll get to meet the people behind the work. Artists are there to sell their pieces, of course, but also to meet the community and chat about their inspiration, techniques and creative process. Beyond meeting the artists, craftspeople will demonstrate their techniques and families can get creative themselves at the Hands On Art Pavilion.
As you visit booths, the music comes to you. And by that, we mean roving musicians move throughout the festival. Local food booths will also be there, with many returning vendors that are local and highly anticipated in Portland.
This year also marks Art in the Pearl’s 30th annual event, originally started with 15 volunteer artists who launched the first festival following the end of Portland’s longtime ArtQuake festival. Decades later, Art in the Pearl remains artist-run, with a volunteer board of working artists continuing the tradition of bringing art directly into the community.
