Sometimes the best summer festivals aren’t found in the biggest cities, but at the end of a scenic highway, a ferry crossing or a winding country road. Across the Northwest, small towns come alive each summer with beloved traditions and quirky celebrations that make a weekend visit feel like you’ve become part of the community. If you’re looking for an excuse to plan a weekend getaway, these four festivals are worth the trip.

Island Jam Music Festival | Friday Harbor, Washington

Why sit in a packed venue with stadium seating when you could take a ferry ride and sprawl out on the lawn? Held at Tanglewood Amphitheater on San Juan Island, the annual Island Jam Music Festival is now in its 28th year, with the main goal of bringing regional musicians together for a weekend of live performances. Surrounded by towering evergreens, you’ll get to hear from local talent and dance for a full weekend that include venues of art, food and more. Between sets, explore Friday Harbor’s waterfront, browse local shops or head out on a whale-watching tour before returning for an evening of music under the stars.

Whidbey Island Fair | Langley, Washington

The Whidbey Island Fair has celebrated its farming roots for more than a century with livestock shows, carnival rides, live entertainment, local artisans and plenty of fair food. Held each July, it’s a hometown festival where pie contests, handmade crafts and community spirit still take center stage. A short ferry ride from the mainland, Whidbey Island invites visitors to slow down with waterfront strolls, local wineries, art galleries and plenty of small-town charm.

Scandinavian Festival | Junction City, Oregon

Leave the interstate behind and cruise through the Willamette Valley to Junction City, a small town that proudly celebrates its Scandinavian roots each summer. For four days each August, Junction City goes big in its celebration of Nordic heritage during the annual Scandinavian Festival, one of the largest events of its kind in the country. Expect traditional folk dancing, colorful costumes, lively parades and handcrafted goods alongside Scandinavian favorites like lefse, æbleskiver and Swedish meatballs. Between performances, visitors can browse artisan vendors, tour the heritage exhibits and soak up the welcoming atmosphere that has made this festival an Oregon tradition for decades.

Nanaimo Marine Festival & World Championship Bathtub Race | Nanaimo, British Columbia

Since 1967, the City of Nanaimo has been known for racing boats and bathtubs. Every summer, Nanaimo hosts its Marine Festival, highlighted by the World Championship Bathtub Race, where competitors race motorized bathtubs across coastal waters in one of Canada’s quirkiest sporting events. Add in a parade, live entertainment, family activities and waterfront festivities, and you’ve got a summer festival that’s every bit as memorable as the ferry ride to get there.
