City of Tacoma Seeking Community Feedback on $20-an-Hour Minimum-Wage Proposal

In a recent discussion led by Deputy Mayor Joe Bushnell during an Economic Development Committee meeting, Tacoma officials mulled over raising the city’s minimum wage to $20 an hour.
“We need a minimum wage that works for the city of Tacoma,” Bushnell said in a statement. “Cost of living remains one of the top concerns for Tacoma residents, and I’m committed to an inclusive, thoughtful analysis of a minimum-wage proposal that considers the diverse experiences and perspectives that make up Tacoma’s economy. That includes hearing from as many people as possible on this issue.”
To engage with city members, stakeholders, and those who would be affected by policy changes, the Tacoma Minimum Wage Community and Stakeholder Engagement Report was released. The report includes the outreach work that Bushnell did, speaking with the business community; nonprofit, child care, and health care workers; unions; and others.
Currently, Bushnell is developing an ordinance that he plans on bringing to the city council for consideration sometime in the fall.
The city has released a survey where community members can write in their thoughts on a future proposal.
