Sound Transit is preparing riders for three years of light rail construction, calling the project Future Ready. The first series begins July 11 and will last until next year.

Link riders should expect intermittent periods of less frequent service and replacement bus service.

“This work is getting us ready for the future, which is why we’re calling it Future Ready,” said John Gallagher, the Sound Transit Light Rail spokesperson.

The first part of the project is replacing platform tiles at Columbia City Station.

“It’s a big project. It’s right at the edge of the platform, and for the safety of the workers, we have no choice but to shut it down,” said Gallagher. “The timing has to be just right because the temperature has to be warm in order for the concrete and the tiles to set properly. And also, it’s a longer process. It’s not work we can do during off-hours. It takes to long to mobilize, get the workers there and get the work done. The only time to do it is during regular work hours.”

Stops will remain at the Columbia Station, however, keep in mind that one side of the platform will be closed, either the north bound or south bound side. Link riders need to be aware of what direction the train is traveling in. Otherwise, this might cause frustration and delays.

Gallagher says that Sound Transit recognizes the disruption this is going to cause, however, he says it’s unavoidable. Sound Transit wants to do the work now, before the system is at full capacity and has to inconvenience more passengers.

The best thing passengers can do is sign up for rider alerts in case disruptions at sound transit occur. You can get those alerts at this website.
