Police have released the name of an 80-year-old man who they say shot three people in the lobby of an apartment building for seniors in Vancouver, Washington.

The Vancouver Police Department says Robert E. Breck fatally shot a man and shot and wounded two women Thursday afternoon. The women were taken to hospitals for treatment and the man died at the scene.

The shooting happened in the lobby of Smith Tower Apartments at 6th Street and Washington Street in downtown Vancouver around 2 p.m.

Breck is a resident of the apartment building, according to Vancouver police. He barricaded himself inside the apartment building after the shooting, according to KGW News. KOIN News reports that police were in verbal communication with the man for a couple hours. He was taken into custody before 4:30 p.m. He was booked into jail on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

No shots were fired by police officers. Police at the scene did not provide a motive for the shooting.

Many residents at the building were evacuated. Some sheltered in place while police swarmed the building.

Vancouver police were aided by a range of law enforcement agencies such as a SWAT team, Washington State Patrol, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Homeland Security, ATF, and Portland police.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
