During the summer of 2003, Seattle hosted a small touring exhibit featuring an original copy of the Declaration of Independence.

The document, known as a “Dunlop Broadside,” had been found hidden in an old picture frame. Hollywood producer Norman Lear purchased it and sent it on a national tour. The old Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) in Montlake was the location, and thousands of people visited the exhibit during its 12-day run.

One evening, MOHAI presented a live reading of the Declaration. It was open to the public and featured numerous local elected officials, both active and retired. Feliks Banel produced the event, and John Curley hosted.

Among the readers were former Seattle Mayor Gordon Clinton (now deceased); former Washington Governor John Spellman; then-Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels; then-King County Councilmember (and now King County Executive) Dow Constantine; then-King County Councilmember Rob McKenna; and former Seattle Mayor Paul Schell.
