There are no more car-sharing services left in Seattle after Share Now (previously known as Car2Go) announced the removal of its vehicles from Seattle and North America late last year.

Seattle’s first ever car-sharing service will soon be the last to leave

But have no fear, car-share lovers, AAA Washington is launching its own app-based, car-rental service in Seattle this spring. GIG Car Share, based in Northern California, will start with 250 Toyota Prius Hybrid cars with bike racks landing on the streets of Seattle in April 2020.

To drive, customers pay 40 cents per minute, $15 per hour, with gas, insurance, and parking included. There is no fee to sign-up or apply, but you do need a driver’s license. Members of AAA will receive a 10 percent discount on each trip, though you are not required to be a member to use GIG.

Drivers can park GIG cars in any designated, residential, or permit-only spots within the HomeZone. The HomeZone has yet to be determined for Seattle, but is defined by GIG as “the area where you can start and end a trip.” GIG’s website says drivers can take the cars anywhere in the U.S., but trips can only start and end within the HomeZone.

GIG started in the Bay Area and later expanded to Sacramento.

While GIG is new to Seattle, the city has seen more than one car-share service in recent years. Lime, ReachNow, and Share Now have all since removed their vehicles from the roads.

GIG Car Share vehicles are expected to start arriving in April, with the full 250 car fleet ready by the end of May 2020. GIG’s website has an offer code for early adopters in Seattle to receive two free hours of driving, available until March 15.
