The active shooter situation that forced the lockdown of Puyallup School District buildings began with a car crash.

At approximately 5:30 a.m. Thursday morning Puyallup police responded to 39 Avenue SW in front of Costco. The driver of the vehicle fled and began firing a gun multiple times.

Just after 7:30 a.m. the suspect was located in brush and arrested.

No injuries were reported.

The search forced the Puyallup School District food services department and Woodland Elementary School to go into lockdown.

According to the school district’s Facebook page, 911 dispatch reported a shooter in the area of the central kitchen.

District officials placed Woodland Elementary School in modified lockdown.

The lockdown had the potential to impact bus schedules. KIRO Radio traffic reporter Chris Sullivan said a large perimeter around the scene was barricaded, including the bus barn. Drivers were not given access to their buses.

The situation also forced the closure of a portion of eastbound 512, Sullivan reported. Drivers trying to get from I-5 to Puyallup were forced to find an alternate route. The road closure caused at least three miles of backup.
