A high school teacher in Anacortes was killed in a multi-vehicle crash Monday morning, the Anacortes School District confirmed.

Edmundo Corrales, 36, died on Dec. 1 in the car crash. He taught Spanish at Anacortes High School.

“Señor Corrales was a dedicated educator whose warmth, humor, and passion for teaching touched the lives of countless students and colleagues,” the district wrote in a statement. “His commitment to helping students grow academically and personally made him an irreplaceable part of our school community. We extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Corrales’s family, friends, students, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”

The fatal car crash

According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), a 27-year-old man driving a Toyota Tacoma crossed the centerline of SR 20 and struck a driver in a Chevrolet at approximately 7 a.m. Dec. 1. The crash happened near N. Dewey Beach Drive.

The driver of the Toyota Tacoma continued forward, hitting a Honda Civic that Corrales was driving. Corrales died at the scene, according to WSP.

The 27-year-old driver who allegedly started the multi-car collision was taken to the hospital to treat his injuries.

No drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash, according to WSP. The cause of the collision is currently under investigation.

“We are committed to supporting Mr. Corrales’s students and the well-being of all members of our school community who may be impacted by this loss,” the district stated. “Grief counselors will be available to students and staff at Anacortes High School, and we encourage anyone in need of support to access these resources. Losing a member of our school community is deeply painful, and if you notice anyone, student or adult, showing signs of grief, please reach out and help connect them with available support services.”
