A serial killer willing to make a deal: That’s what we’re learning from jail house interviews just released of Israel Keyes from the months between his arrest and his death.

Israel Keyes was arrested in March of 2012 for the murder of an Alaskan Barista but he’s believed to have killed as many as 12 people around the country, and maybe more.

Before he committed suicide in his jail cell in December, Keyes agreed to talk about some of his crimes in exchange for favors.

For example, he said he would give them the locations of two bodies in Vermont for a cigar. He also tried to bargain for more exercise time but he told an FBI agent, an Anchorage Police Officer and a U.S. attorney he wanted to try and keep the details out of the media for the sake of his daughter.

“I don’t plan on being around a whole lot longer, but a big concern to me is – my kid’s going to be around. I don’t want her to type my name into the computer and it pop up. I already know stuff is going to come up and all that. I just want to minimize it at this point, I guess.”

On May 29, two months after his arrest he also talked about trips he took to Washington state.

Keyes didn’t seem to ever give agents any details about his crimes in our state but he eluded to committing several here.

When an interviewer asked him which federal district he should contact in Washington state, west (Seattle and Tacoma,) or east (Spokane and Yakima,) he laughed.

Keyes asked which district Ellensburg was in, and when the interviewer said it was east, Keyes replied, “You’re going to need both districts then.”

FBI Special Agent Jolene Goeden also showed Keyes a list of items seized – presumably from his boat in Washington state, including swabs taken of possible blood stains and “a ball of unknown material.”

Nearly 15 hours of interviews have been released but likely, there is much more we’ll never hear.
