Bald eagle survives collision on I-405

Feb 16, 2015, 3:31 PM | Updated: 4:53 pm

While maybe a little stunned, a bald eagle survived a crash on I-405 near Kirkland Sunday evening.

The bird passed over the highway too low and smashed into a car in the southbound lanes, leaving a big gash in the glass.

“About the time that wildlife officers showed up to take it away to the animal hospital, amazingly, the bird hopped up and flew away onto a nearby tree,” Washington State Trooper Chris Webb told KIRO Radio.

Webb said there was another eagle resting on the median. It sat there and watched the entire event unfold. Eagles do mate for life, according to the American Eagle Foundation.

“Luckily both birds ended up taking off and they weren’t cited for any pedestrian violations,” Webb said. “I’ve never seen one get hit out here on the freeway.”

Besides a heavily damaged windshield and stunned bird, there were no other reports of injuries or damage.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
