Bellevue police kill man in Seattle warrant search

Mar 22, 2013, 7:35 AM | Updated: 4:34 pm

Bellevue police shot and killed a man Friday morning in South Seattle.

The Seattle Police Department says the man was a robbery suspect trying to run down Bellevue SWAT officers.

The officers were serving a search warrant, looking for two robbery suspects in a string of crimes around the region.

Carla Iafrate with Bellevue Police said the officers were approaching the house around 5 a.m. when a man in a tan Mercedes noticed the officers, tried to reverse, ran into a truck, and then stepped on the gas.

Officers feared he would run them over, rather than surrender. Three officers opened fire.

The man died a few hours later at Harborview Medical Center.

The Seattle SWAT team replaced the Bellevue team after dawn to search the home near 42nd Avenue South and South Hudson Street, in the Columbia City neighborhood.

Police say the man was suspected in a series of robberies in both Bellevue and Seattle.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The shooting will be investigated by Seattle police, Seattle police spokeswoman Renee Witt said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
