A house fire erupted in Bellingham on Monday, causing significant damage in a blaze believed to have originated from a wood-burning stove in a detached garage.

The fire occurred at approximately 1:26 p.m. in the 3000 block of Walnut Street, the Bellingham Fire Department (BFD) announced.

Crews were dispatched to the residence after reports of a working residential structure fire.

Blaze extended to a neighboring garage before Bellingham Fire crews brought it under control

BFD’s Engine 1 arrived on the scene first and found the working fire involving a detached garage that had already extended over to the main residence and a neighboring detached garage.

Fire department crews took on an aggressive fire attack and brought the fire under control quickly. Officials noted the strategy helped to prevent the fire from spreading any further.

As firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, additional crews searched through the affected structures to ensure that no occupants remained inside. All occupants were accounted for, but BFD stated one resident sustained a minor injury.

BFD noted the fire destroyed both detached garages and caused significant damage to the main residence.
