Boeing, machinists agree on landmark pay for performance plan

Boeing’s union machinists will now start earning bonuses for
how many planes they build and how safely they’re doing it.

The bonus plan was part of the unprecedented labor deal
reached between the two last year.

The Seattle Times reports it will allow for bonuses of up to
4 percent of gross wages if the machinists meet certain
benchmarks in the Puget Sound region, Portland and
Wichita, Kan.

They will be judged on how many parts are produced, how fast
planes are built, the number of defects found, and the number
of workplace accidents.

The new system takes effect at the end of June, with the
first bonuses likely to be paid in February, if they are
earned.

This is the first time machinists have had a bonus program.
Non-union Boeing workers and engineers have had one for
years.
