A couple of stop signs went up in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood last month. But they weren’t supposed to be there.

The two unauthorized stop signs installed at 14th Avenue East and East John Street—one on the east leg and one on the west leg—were removed because they did not meet city standards, said Mariam Ali, deputy press secretary for the Seattle Department of Transportation.

“At this time, we’ll collect data to understand if stop signs might be a good option for this intersection,” Ali said.

Residents who believe their neighborhood needs a stop sign can submit an official request by emailing 684-ROAD@seattle.gov.

“Typically, when the department identifies a need for stop signs through customer requests, project design, and observation and data collection, we take several steps,” Ali said. “First, we mark a stop line and install the sign next to it. Then, we place A-frames to alert drivers with a ‘stop sign ahead’ warning. Our goal is always to ensure safety for everyone using the road.”
