Boy brings gun, 400 rounds of ammunition to Vancouver school

Police say an 11-year-old who took a gun to his Vancouver, Wash., middle school intended to shoot another student to prevent him from bullying a friend.

The police report was released Thursday as the boy appeared in Clark County Juvenile Court.

The report says the boy heard a voice telling him the killing was a good idea.

The Columbian reports the judge ordered a mental competency hearing. The boy remains in custody and his case will be reviewed Friday.

Officers responded to Frontier Middle School about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to investigate a report that ammunition had been found there. Police located the ammunition and multiple weapons, including knives and a handgun.

Kim Kapp, with Vancouver Police, says it was the boy’s parents who notified police that something might be wrong.

“The call actually came in from his parents to the school after they had noticed a number of their kitchen knives missing,” says Kapp.

The middle school and adjacent Pioneer Elementary School were locked down for about two hours.

The boy was interviewed by detectives and arrested for investigation of one count of attempted murder.

An estimated 900 students attend the middle school and about 600 attend the elementary school, according to The Columbian.

Parents were primarily alerted about the ammunition and weapons find through the Frontier and district Facebook pages, along with the district website, said Kris Fay, Evergreen Public Schools spokesperson.

While middle school students were sent home with an explanatory letter, elementary school students did not get a letter because they were on an early release schedule, Fay said.

The boy was booked into the Clark County juvenile detention center.
