Boy Scout troop devastated by theft of camping gear

Oct 15, 2012, 5:25 AM | Updated: 6:38 am

A Puyallup Boy Scout troop is reeling after someone stole the camping gear they spent months saving to buy.

Scoutmaster Doug Nagler tells KING 5 he discovered someone pried the lock off troop 503’s storage unit behind Pilgrim Lutheran Church and stole 18 new tents, camp stoves and pop-up canopies.

Nagler says the troop spent six months selling candy to raise money to buy the gear, worth about $4,000.

“We would help anybody. Boy Scouts would dedicate their time. But thinking that someone would do this back to us, it’s pretty shocking,” says Boy Scout Kyler, who says the troop has a camping trip planned in two weeks.

“I think it is horrible because we’ve worked hard to raise money to buy our new stuff,” says Boy Scout Wyatt Gill. “If they had asked for one thing, we could have given it to them. But instead they had to steal it.”

Nagler says the troop hopes to borrow gear for their planned camping trip and will put on more fundraisers.

Anyone with information about the stolen gear should call the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department at (253) 798-4721.
