Bus riders dodge cuts in Pierce County

Pierce Transit bus riders can relax today. The agency is not going to slash service in September like it had planned.

Pierce Transit voted last month to cut service by 28 percent. It said it just didn’t have the money to operate at its current levels after a sales tax increase failed in the November election.

But an un-expected 11-percent jump in sales tax revenue over the first few months of this year will keep those cuts from happening. The News Tribune reports the transit board will meet next week to cancel its plan.

It was going to lay-off 84 workers and cut service by more than 100,000 hours, eliminating service on almost every route.
