Starting Aug. 9, fully vaccinated U.S. travelers will be able to visit Canada again for recreation or any other reason, though they must also have a negative COVID-19 test.

“We continue to maintain that all travelers are required to do a pre-departure test, regardless of their vaccination status. This also helps to eliminate any asymptomatic infections in vaccinated individuals,” said Canadian Minister of Health Patty Hajdu.

Hajdu says Canada has seen a few breakthrough cases in vaccinated Canadians since measures were relaxed for those travelers earlier this month.

Travelers will be able to submit proof of vaccination through the ArriveCAN app, or the online portal.

For now, the U.S. land border still remains closed to Canadians for non-essential rips.

“The measures that we have adopted together as a country have been largely reciprocal and generally symmetric, but not entirely so because each of us faces unique and constantly changing circumstances,” said Bill Blair, the Canadian minister of public safety. “We’ll continue to work very closely with the Americans.”

The U.S./Canadian border has been closed since March 2020, with new 30-day extensions announced each month since.
