As KIRO Newsradio has been reporting, car theft cases in Washington state have shot up dramatically. So, what’s the best way to keep from becoming a statistic?

Dramatic rise in car thefts blamed on new Washington state law

Northwest Insurance Council President Kenton Brine says there is a variety of anti-theft technology available for your car.

“Car alarms, of course. You can also put in car sensors that will help track your vehicle if it is stolen. Today, with many cars, you can turn it off and on with an app on your phone,” Brine said.

Your auto dealer or insurance company can let you know what your options are, but you also may want to consider lower tech items, like steering wheel locks and brake lock bars. These typically don’t cost a lot, and just the sight of them can deter thieves.

Which brings us to the basics.

Bob Passmore with the American Property Casualty Insurance Association says don’t make your car an inviting target.

“Don’t leave it unlocked, don’t leave it in your driveway with the keys in it. Don’t leave valuables out where thieves can see them,” Passmore said.

Ross: Save car chases for the movies

Remember that car thefts are often a crime of opportunity, so as Brine says: “The key for you as a driver is what can I do to make my car less likely to be stolen than the car next to it?”
