Two Centralia students face arson charges after they allegedly torched a school-issued Chromebook as part of a social media trend, according to KIRO 7.

Authorities believe the vandalism is connected to the so-called “Chromebook challenge,” a viral internet trend popular on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. The trend encourages students to destroy school laptops by shoving conductive items into the computer.

The fire started in a classroom on Thursday at a local middle school. First responders quickly found a Chromebook with fire damage, including melted plastic, as well as smoke pouring out from the lithium battery compartment. Photos show a scorched desk, along with scattered metal pieces like safety pins and paperclips.

Prosecuting Attorney Jonathan Meyer requested that the students be held in juvenile detention. However, the judge ordered them to remain under house arrest instead. Police Chief Andy Caldwell says the students deliberately started the fire. He is urging parents to speak with their children about replicating such stunts.

The trend has raised concerns nationwide. The New York Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services recently issued a warning, cautioning parents about the destructive challenge. Beyond the risk of fire, officials point out that burning electronics can release toxic fumes that can be harmful to the lungs.
