Cigarette blamed for deadly Edmonds fire

Oct 11, 2012, 6:45 AM | Updated: 8:06 am

A lit cigarette is being blamed for a fire that killed a 40-year-old Edmonds man Wednesday afternoon.

“The investigators suspect that the resident fell asleep while he was smoking a cigarette,” says Leslie Hynes with the Snohomish County Fire District 1.

The fire, which broke out in the second floor unit, damaged four apartments at the three-story Edmonds Highlands Apartments complex on the 23300 block of Edmonds Way, according to Hynes. Damage is estimated at $550,000.

The victim has not been identified.

Hynes says the fire forced 11 residents from their homes. She says they don’t have insurance and the Red Cross is helping them out.
