A Clark County Sheriff’s deputy unintentionally shot and killed an off-duty Vancouver police officer Saturday night, reports Oregon Live.

Vancouver Police Officer Donald Sahota was killed Saturday while off duty at his home, per the Vancouver Police Department.

That evening, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office reported an officer-involved shooting in response to an armed robbery at a convenience store in the Orchards area of Vancouver, Washington. The suspect was described as in possession of a handgun and a stolen vehicle, according to a CCSO news release.

“The suspect contacted a homeowner in a nearby residence,” the release continues. “Police responded and contacted all parties. In the course of this contact a deputy with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office discharged his firearm. The individual who was struck was provided medical aid at the scene but was eventually pronounced deceased.”

The shooting occurred in Battle Ground, Washington. Battle Ground is the residence of officer Donald Sahota, according to public records.

Oregon Live did not disclose its source, but report independent confirmation that the armed robbery suspect was pursued by police, knocked on doors in Sahota’s neighborhood, entered Sahota’s residence, and fought with Sahota. A deputy on scene then fired, unintentionally killing Sahota.

“My heart goes out to Officer Sahota’s family and friends and those of us in his VPD family as well,” Vancouver Police Chief James McElvain wrote. “His death is a tragic loss, and he will be deeply missed by many.”
