Savannah DeMelo, a midfielder for Racing Louisville, collapsed on the field late in the first half of a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) match against the Seattle Reign at Lumen Field.

Trainers and medical staff rushed to her side to provide medical assistance. The game was postponed as players from both teams gathered.

The team confirmed DeMelo is stable and alert after she was rushed to a local hospital.

“Savannah, who received immediate on-field care from medical personnel, is stable and alert,” Racing Louisville stated. “She was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.”

“We stand side by side with Louisville during this time and thank our fans for their support,” the Seattle Reign added.

The game, scoreless at the time, will resume at a later date.

DeMelo was the No. 4 pick in the 2022 NWSL draft after playing for USC. She was invited to be a part of the U.S. national team for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

DeMelo’s history of medical issues

DeMelo, 27, announced she had been diagnosed with Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism earlier this year.

A few months before the announcement, she left a match with dizziness and chest tightness. A stretcher was required to take her off the field of play.

“We recognize the concern this incident may cause, particularly in light of recent conversations around player safety,” the NWSL stated. “The NWSL remains committed to ensuring that the highest standards of medical care and emergency response are in place at every match.”
