Weight-loss drugs, Ozempic and Wegovy, will now be available at more than 600 Costco pharmacies nationwide.

Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company that manufactures Ozempic and Wegovy, announced Friday that its prescription injectable pens will be sold inside Costco’s pharmacies, according to CBS News.

“We want to make sure we offer the real, authentic Wegovy and Ozempic where patients seek care,” David Moore, president of Novo Nordisk Inc. and executive vice president of U.S. operations, told NBC News. “We know that Costco is a trusted brand.”

Ozempic and Wegovy are drugs used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. The drug works by increasing insulin release and reducing the appetite of its users. The most common form of Ozempic is used as a two-milligram prefilled, injectable pen.

Costco’s pricing for Ozempic, Wegovy

A one-month supply will cost $499 for consumers without insurance. For members who have insurance, the price will vary depending on the plan. Both weight-loss drugs typically retail for approximately $1,300, according to GoodRx.

Costco’s executive members and Costco Citibank Visa cardholders will also receive a cash back reward as part of Costco’s prescription rewards program, according to NBC News. Costco members will still need a prescription to purchase both Ozempic and Wegovy.

“Our collaboration with Costco is another step forward by Novo Nordisk in making real Wegovy and Ozempic easier to access and afford — right where people already shop,” Moore said in a statement.

FDA approves Wegovy for weight loss

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced last year that Wegovy has been FDA-approved for weight loss, claiming the drug can reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack, and strokes in adults with cardiovascular disease or obesity.

“Wegovy is also approved to reduce excess weight and maintain weight reduction long term in certain adults with obesity or overweight and certain children with obesity, for use in addition to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity,” according to the FDA.

Unlike Wegovy, Ozempic has not been FDA-approved for weight loss; however, it was approved for treating type 2 diabetes in 2017.
