Crash prompts more changes to downtown Seattle bike lane

Oct 8, 2014, 7:29 PM | Updated: Oct 9, 2014, 9:05 am

The Seattle Department of Transportation has made more changes to the new separated bike lane on Second Avenue downtown after a crash between a car and bike.

The crash happened Wednesday morning between Pike and Union streets when a car turned across the lane in order to enter a parking garage.

The female bike rider was checked out by medics at the scene but was able to ride off on her own.

The collision prompted the SDOT to remove several parking spaces along Second Avenue to increase visibility, according to The Seattle Times.

The city has also eliminated an additional 50 feet of street parking next to the garage where the crash happened.

A spokesman for the SDOT says it will also add warning signs for bike riders to slow down on the downhill stretch. They hope the signs will stop speeding cyclists from getting hit by cars that don’t see them.

The SDOT revised traffic signals along Second Avenue a few days after the opening of the separated lane to reduce confusion by creating separate lights for cyclists and drivers. Traffic engineer Dongho Chang told KIRO Radio, at the time, that he would continue monitoring the corridor and make additional changes if needed.
