Tacoma fire crews rescued six dogs from a burning home early Friday.

The department first tweeted about the fire at the home in the 200 block of East 69th Street at 4:43 a.m.

The first crews to arrive said heavy smoke and flames were coming through the roof from an attic fire.

Search crews found six dogs inside. Some received oxygen delivered by special masks designed for cats and dogs.

Around 6 a.m., Tacoma fire tweeted that five of the six dogs were up and moving with the sixth still receiving oxygen.

A ladder company assigned to cut ventilation holes in the roof were unable to do so because of unsafe conditions. A crew moved onto the second floor to fight the flames.

The fire has since been knocked down and crews are working on ensuring all hot spots are out.

A fire investigator was requested to come to the scene. The cause is under investigation.

Tacoma fire crews will continue to remove fire debris from house.

No other injuries were reported.
