Pierce County deputies are investigating a fatal, officer-involved shooting that happened early Friday morning on a highway near Roy.
Detective Ed Troyer says a deputy making a routine traffic stop was radioing in when the man in his 50s got out of his car with a gun, saying he’s going to end it right there.
When the man wouldn’t put down the gun, and raised it towards the deputy, the officer shot and killed the man.
“Sometimes people will commit suicide by cop,” says Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer. “At this point we don’t know if that’s the case here, but that is definitely one of the things we’re looking at.”
Troyer says the officer is on paid administrative leave. Highway 702 is still closed while the Washington State Patrol investigates.
