After 65 years in Seattle, Dick’s Drive-In is celebrating by offering up burgers for 19 cents each across its seven locations.

Dick’s first opened its doors on this day in 1954 on Northeast 45th Street, slinging 19-cent burgers to hungry Seattleites. The saga started with founder Dick Spady, whose goal was to provide affordable food to the masses.

Spady passed away at 92 years old in 2016, succeeded by his family who still runs the franchise.

In the years since, Dick’s Drive-In has become a Northwest institution, opening locations in Wallingford, Capitol Hill, Edmonds, Queen Anne, Holman Road, Lake City, and most recently, Kent.

That Kent location has come under scrutiny lately — shortly after opening its doors in December, the property it sits on found itself on a shortlist for a new Sound Transit light rail maintenance facility.

If it’s ultimately chosen, eminent domain could force the newest Dick’s location — along with a handful of retail outlets and restaurants in the area — to pack up and leave.

Tuesday’s 65th anniversary promotion is limited to one per customer in-store, and includes either a cheeseburger or a hamburger.
