The primary race for Washington’s 8th Congressional District has essentially been a contest to see which Democrat will face Republican Dino Rossi in the November election. Initial primary results Tuesday night indicate Democrat Kim Schrier will be that contender.

Rossi led the pack with about 43 percent of the vote. Schrier leads the Democrats with Jason Rettereiser trailing close behind. Shannon Hader rounded out the three-way race among the party.  Eight other candidates on the ballot were significantly trailing these four candidates Tuesday night.

Rossi is a former state senator and candidate for Washington governor. His campaign has emphasized his goal of achieving bipartisan solutions. The Republican has stated he wants to keep Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and make them permanent. He is endorsed by Republican Congressmember Dave Reichert who is exiting the 8th District position Rossi is running for.

Schrier is a pediatrician out of Issaquah. She has previously promoted that she is not a career politician and a new voice for Congress. As a member of Congress, she would aim to strengthen the Affordable Care Act. She also supports a clean energy economy.

Initial ballot results were released at 8 p.m. Tuesday. The results will be updated Wednesday afternoon.
