Washington Governor Jay Inslee has agreed to take on KIRO Radio host Dori Monson in a game of basketball.

The question of who’s better at the sport dates back to chats the pair had at the Democratic Convention in 2004.

“We were busting each other’s chops about who had the best 3-point stroke. We were both so humble, we just couldn’t agree on that,” said Inslee, in an appearance on The Dori Monson Show Monday.

Though they’ve gone back and forth for years, Dori said he doubted an actual, physical basketball competition would ever come together.

“But now we actually have a date on the calendar,” said Monson. “You and I are going to put together a fundraiser basketball game that will fill the shelves of some local food bank. Also, we can finally settle what is now 9-year-old question between you and me.”

The big fundraiser game event will take place at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at Shorecrest High School. The challenge will start with youth games coached by Inslee and Monson.

Then there will be a big five-on-five showdown with KIRO Radio and 710 ESPN Seattle personalities playing against a team of five local politicians led by Inslee.

For the big finale, the governor and Dori will play one-on-one. Don’t miss your chance to see this matchup.

Inslee, at age 62 and a height of 6’2, said this will be his first game in about six months. Monson who is 52 years old and 5’9, plays every Thursday and coaches at Shorecrest High School.

“You have five inches on me, but I have 10 years on you,” said Monson. “I believe height beats youth in basketball.”

But Inslee said he’s heard Monson is extremely crafty.

“I wouldn’t want to play Muggsy Bogues, Spud Webb, or Nate Robinson, or you. You’re all in that same category.”

Save the date: Wednesday, Nov. 6, 7 p.m. at Shorecrest High School. Stay tuned for more info on how to get your tickets.
