There are five King County Council positions up for election, and an incumbent is in each race. In early returns, one notable incumbent is trailing, while the rest have jumped out to sizable early leads.

In one of the more talked about races before Election Day, incumbent Kathy Lambert is trailing challenger Sarah Perry by 56% to 43% for Council District No. 3.

In October, Lambert was removed from council leadership positions and all external boards and committees where she represents the council as a result of an offensive campaign mailer she sent out that used what many feel, including members on the council, are racist images.

Perry — a Democrat who previously worked in fundraising at Seattle University — garnered 36% of the vote in the August primary election, trailing close behind Lambert at 40%. While Lambert has served on the council for two decades, this marks her first prominent campaign challenger in years.

For Council District No. 1, Rod Dembowski continues to lead Sally Caverzan by an 83% to 16% margin.

Councilmember Dembowski is facing accusations detailing a history of verbally abusive behavior toward female colleagues and staff members, though he clarified to KIRO Radio that no official complaint had been filed against him.

In Council District No. 5, Dave Upthegrove leads Shukri Olow in early results, with 65% of the vote, compared to Olow’s 34%.

Representing South King County, Pete von Reichbauer leads Dominique Torgerson with 67% of the early vote tallies in Council District No. 7.

In Council District No. 9, Reagan Dunn leads Kim-Khanh Van in early results by 62% to 37%.

There are nine districts in total represented on the King County Council. Districts 2, 4, 6, and 8 are not up for reelection this year. Councilmembers in those districts are Girmay Zahilay, Jeanne Kohl-Welles, Claudia Balducci, and Joe McDermott.
