Effort to name new ferry the ‘M.V. Ivar Haglund’

In the past, Washington State Ferries have taken on tribal names, but there’s an effort underway to call one of two new boats the “M.V. Ivar Haglund.”
Bartell Drugs has posted petitions in all of its local stores through Sept. 23 to try to get the iconic restaurateur’s name on the side of a 144-car Olympic Class ferry.
“The ‘M.V. Ivar Haglund’ plying the waters of Puget Sound would be a fitting tribute to his legacy,” said Chairman and CEO George D. Bartell. “Ivar brought the color and pioneering spirit of Puget Sound to our doorsteps through his music, restaurants and colorful personality.”
The most recently named boats in the state’s 23 vessel fleet were named Chetzemoka, Salish, and Kennewick.
While ‘M.V. Ivar Haglund’ may meet the other naming criteria, there may be issue with the final guideline: names with commercial overtones or names honoring or commemorating individuals should be avoided, but will be considered upon careful review.
But of course, Haglund was known for more than just his eateries. He also opened the city’s first aquarium, he was a folk singer, and he put on the Elliott Bay fireworks display for years.
Haglund bought Smith Tower in 1976 and was elected to the Seattle Port Commission in 1983 as part of a prank. Haglund died in 1985.
