Experts to analyze new Seattle arena plans

Now that investor Chris Hansen’s architects have revealed designs for a new basketball arena, a citizens panel will decide if they fit into Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood.
The options for the 18,000 to 20,000 seat facility includes soaring glass, brick and concrete walls, wide, cascading entrance steps, with views of Elliot Bay from the top.
Tuesday night, at Seattle City Hall, a five-member-citizen panel of experts, the Downtown Design Review Board, will quiz Hansen’s architects about how the designs fit into local development guidelines. It’s a first-of-its kind formal design review process for a Seattle sports facility.
Neighbors and others will also get a chance to comment on the designs for the $490 million arena that would sit on property just south of Safeco Field.
The preferred concept for the $490 million complex would have sweeping views of the city skyline and Elliot Bay. The plans show potential building shapes, but no exterior colors and finishes.
The formal review process is expected to last a year before a design is officially chosen.
360 Architecture Inc. told the city’s Design and Review Board that the new arena will be unique and pedestrian friendly, and blend well with the neighborhood.
